About the IICRC

The IICRC was formed in 1972 to serve as an independent certification body to set and promote high standards and ethics and to advance communication and technical proficiency within the inspection, cleaning and restoration service industries. It became a non-profit organization in 1986/87.Sixteen regional, national and international trade associations and three individuals own stock in the IICRC. Each entity owns a block of 500 shares and has one vote on the Board of Directors. No one shareholder has controlling interest.

The IICRC does not own or operate schools or employ instructors; rather it approves independent schools and instructors to teach and administer IICRC certification programs. Currently, the IICRC has approximately 150 approved instructors.

The IICRC works hard to develop relationships between its registrants and other groups such as affiliated partners in carpet and upholstery manufacturing, and in the insurance industry. We expend considerable effort informing them of the benefits of using IICRC registrants and firms. The IICRC maintains a Registrant Web Site (www.iicrc.org), and a Consumer Web Site (www.certifiedcleaners.org). Additionally, the IICRC maintains a toll-free number (1-800-835-4624) and The IICRC Referral System, as a service to registrants and consumers. An IICRC newsletter is distributed on a regular basis to our registrants, which provides information on the organization as well as the industry.

IICRC-approved instructors must have at least 5 years actual experience in the applied-for subject field. Foremost, they must be of good reputation and respected within the industry. They must be affiliated with an IICRC-approved school, or they must have their first two courses monitored by an IICRC representative. Every two years instructors attend the IICRC sponsored "Train the Trainer Course." Initially, all instructors are presented for approval to the Certification Council (a group of some 100-industry representatives) and to the IICRC Board of Directors for final approval.
